Vegan Deodorant

This party’s gonna smell good.

This party’s gonna smell good.

This is an honest product review - I bought these products myself. A girls’s gotta have deodorant!

So - deodorant. Not anti-perspirant, because we all know perspiring is natural and important. But to find a vegan friendly, eco friendly, plastic-free, EFFECTIVE deodorant? No mean feat!

I used to depend on Mitchum and Mitchum’s tagline used to be ‘so good you can even miss a day’. They don’t say that anymore but it was true, Mitchum was the first deodorant I ever found which actually worked, reliably. It was also an anti-perspirant, but I wasn’t stopping to think what was in it to make it so effective.

Then I went vegan and figured Mitchum probably wasn’t. My desire to buy only vegan brands outweighs my desire to smell like flowers, but only by a smidge. I missed Mitchum! I wasn’t having much luck with the vegan friendly alternatives.

But now I think I’ve got it down, so I’m here to share my verdict.

Pit-Rock has been around so long, veganism was but a twinkle in my eye when my sister-in-law was using it and I was a teenager one million years ago. Made from pure mineral salts, it’s free of all the bad stuff we want to avoid. 7 out of 10 for effectiveness, but it doesn’t smell amazing. I just thought for a long time that 7 out of 10 was as good as it got for vegan friendly deodorant.

Special mention must go to Fit-Pit deodorant cream. I discovered it at a vegan festival and love the way you take a little cream on your fingers and smear it on your armpit. Some people might not like that application process but I liked getting to know an area of my body I don’t usually touch and checking for lumps and bumps while I was at it. It comes in a 100ml glass jar, so it’s plastic free, plus aluminum and paraben free. 8 out of 10 for effectiveness and I like the fragrance too.

Then, along came Mitchum with a new deodorant which ticked so many of my boxes. 0% aluminium - hurrah! 96% natural - pretty close! Bamboo powder - bamboo’s all the rage isn’t it? Coconut scent - my favourite scent! Unlike other Mitchum products, this one is not an antiperspirant. The drawbacks are that it’s in a plastic tube and after it reaches the point where it thinks it’s empty and the twisty thing no longer turns, I can see there’s still loads of product left in the tube which I want to get at - I paid for it! 9 out of 10 for effectiveness.

Wild ticks every box I can think of, when thinking of the boxes I need ticked from my deodorant.

It’s vegan friendly, plastic-free, leaves no strains on clothes (usually attributed to aluminum in traditional deodorants). There’s a veritable buffet of delicious flavours to choose from: I went for Pina Colada (mmm, coconuts), Mint & Eucalyptus and Coconut Dreams (mmm, coconuts). They all smell delicious. You get to use every last smidge of the product and you’ll want to because, sing it from the hills, this stuff works! I don’t notice any whiff throughout the day, or even during my workout the following morning. It’s not an overpowering fragrance - we’re not talking Lynx levels of suffocating passers-by here, but just a gentle ‘you smell nice’ rather than a whiffy ‘you need a shower’.

10 out of 10 for effectiveness and all other markers of a Good Brand.

Wild have a subscription programme and you can pick and mix flavours, then refills are sent to be clicked into the one case you keep forever.

I’ve tried a ton of other vegan friendly deodorants I’m not here to bad-mouth. These are the ones I love and Wild wins my loyalty for being most vegan-friendly, most plastic-free and most importantly on a selfish level, most effective.
